There are only a select few that I consider worthy of the Blackcloud Industries duck sombrero....

and Derrick, has proven his worth. dancing-048.gif

Grizz I'm sure he would be honored to wear it!

The "skunk" is officially off my back! D and I went out this morning to a little WPA, walk in area south of town. We had not hunted this spot before and just wanted something
quick and close. It was 26 this morning and after out little walk to the water, we found a thin layer of ice. We headed in and cleared a path to the chest high weeds we were going to hide in. I put the decoys out and D set up our stuff up on dry land about 15 yards behind us. I've fashioned two farm, grain type of feeder things, each about 36x26x10, as a sled for pulling stuff along the grass, field, ice or water. They only cost me 30 bucks and stack on top of each other for saving space. Anyway, I flipped those over and made a little rat hut for Mocha to sit on. We were all squared away and waited for shooting time. Of course, with 3 minutes to go, Swoooooosh, splash. A lone teal sets down. Swims around a little and is gone with 2 minutes to go. A teaching moment.

Within 15 minutes of shooting time we had a group of 4 mallards swing in, circle and one drake pulled off and started feet down. I said to D "take him", we both posted up, I was waiting and waiting, then just before I couldn't wait any longer, we both bang at about the same time and fold the drake right in the decoys. High fives and I send Mocha who didn't see it. I had to walk out a little to get her moving, but she spotted it, grabbed it and started coming back. I walked back to our hide and waited for Mocha. D was holding my gun, I took the drake from Mocha and was about to walk it back to dry land when I look up and 6 teal have screamed into our faces! I drop the duck, tell D, grab my gun and by the time we are posted, they are out of range. It always happens like that! We didn't fire another shot, but saw what must be some northern birds trading around the area. Good for our company coming up later next week!

Heading out solo in the AM, could wake up to 2-4 inches of snow! Weird summer and fall.

Good stuff Drew - good to hear that both of your "pups" are getting into the swing of things. Keep us posted while we wait for our "trick or treat" opener down here.

SNOW!!! Long story short, blind, boat and motor all good to go. Yamaha's are a little cold blooded, but a good workout all the same. Never fired a shot, watched some ducks, through
the fog like snow. Heading in to the landing kicked up four black ducks. Well, I think they were black ducks, size of a mallard, body shape of a mallard and all black. Never seen them here before. Four more sleeps till the hunting party arrives!!

Great stuff MN.

Looking forward to getting there. Sounds like you have
some cool places lined up to hunt.

Well since my season has ground to a halt for now and since my buddy Brian never posts anyway, I will post a picture of his
carnage pile. He is out in ND, way NW, ND, killing birds with his brother in law. I don't know the story, but pictures are always good.

DP, he's not a hippy. Just a hard working guy who saves his time to take off once every couple years to ND. But I may start
calling him one if he doesn't post up some when he gets back down here. I told him to push some birds down here when he starts
his journey back. D and I should get out Sunday, with fingers crossed, to even see a bird.

Hey MN,

It's been a while. Anything to report on the Northern front?

Several skunks since any last reporting. Hardly any ducks around. Have not seen any movement either. Although last weekend I went over to
that little lake with the cows and used the east side point. Watched two groups of snows flitter around the lake for about 15 minutes. Saw a total
of 5 ducks that didn't want anything to do with the water. Did see a few honkers, but nothing close to make the gun go bang.

D and I will try a field hunt Saturday morning and maybe one of the walk in's on Sunday.

On the other hand, not spending time out hunting has my running back on track. So that has been good.

The 2009 skunk is off again....for now! Snuck out this morning with only Mocha in tow, my usual hunting buddy D was under the weather from
a long weekend of sleep overs and the first week of dry land ski workouts. I headed to the old stand by down south, where we normally walk in.
I had a couple plans in mind depending on the water level and my best plan worked out. A quarter mile walk through shin deep water and I had
everything set up. Was a little late getting down there, we had heavy fog this morning.

Anyway, the first group of mallards worked the area a little after sun up and I was able to pull three off the main group after several circles. They
ended up 20 yards high, but right over me. I pulled up and picked a drake and two shots brought him down. He landed 10 yards to my left in the weeds.
Mocha was watching the other group work out front, so after they turned to leave, about 10 seconds, I sent her towards where I saw the drake go down.
We both walked down there, she went by the spot I thought it would be, I went by the spot I thought it would be and started to panic. Where did that damn
thing go? I bring Mocha back and tell her "dead bird" and she caught the scent. She started into the heavy weeds and I see her sticking her head in the thick weeds.
She is kind of messing around in there and I see the drake on his belly scooting under a branch. I'm encouraging Mocha the whole time, this was kind of her first
official cripple in high weeds. She keeps coming up with butt feathers in her mouth but no bird. Finally I reach in, grab it and ring his neck. DEAD BIRD!!

No band. We had two more groups of 15 - 25 birds work us and I probably should have taken a poke at one group, but wanted "one more pass". We had blue skies
and no wind. Called it a day, but was pretty excited to see the birds and after conferring with Echo, he felt they were likely "new" birds too. I may have to sneak away
before next weekend for another morning hunt. Have a great week everyone.
