The 2009 skunk is off again....for now! Snuck out this morning with only Mocha in tow, my usual hunting buddy D was under the weather from
a long weekend of sleep overs and the first week of dry land ski workouts. I headed to the old stand by down south, where we normally walk in.
I had a couple plans in mind depending on the water level and my best plan worked out. A quarter mile walk through shin deep water and I had
everything set up. Was a little late getting down there, we had heavy fog this morning.
Anyway, the first group of mallards worked the area a little after sun up and I was able to pull three off the main group after several circles. They
ended up 20 yards high, but right over me. I pulled up and picked a drake and two shots brought him down. He landed 10 yards to my left in the weeds.
Mocha was watching the other group work out front, so after they turned to leave, about 10 seconds, I sent her towards where I saw the drake go down.
We both walked down there, she went by the spot I thought it would be, I went by the spot I thought it would be and started to panic. Where did that damn
thing go? I bring Mocha back and tell her "dead bird" and she caught the scent. She started into the heavy weeds and I see her sticking her head in the thick weeds.
She is kind of messing around in there and I see the drake on his belly scooting under a branch. I'm encouraging Mocha the whole time, this was kind of her first
official cripple in high weeds. She keeps coming up with butt feathers in her mouth but no bird. Finally I reach in, grab it and ring his neck. DEAD BIRD!!
No band. We had two more groups of 15 - 25 birds work us and I probably should have taken a poke at one group, but wanted "one more pass". We had blue skies
and no wind. Called it a day, but was pretty excited to see the birds and after conferring with Echo, he felt they were likely "new" birds too. I may have to sneak away
before next weekend for another morning hunt. Have a great week everyone.
