Matt,
You being "new" and me being "Old" at the game I will pass on this fool proof way of IDing birds.

Any duck that flops right in reguardless of how much (and Bad the Other Ron calls) is a Gaddy!

Any duck that is pointed on both ends and Never comes close enough to shoot is a Pinner.

Any single dark duck that lands out side the decoys (althought really a hen Mallard) is for sure a Black.......

Any short winged speed duck that embarrasses us all with a pass 10ft from the blind and escapes 9-15 shots is allways a Bluebill.

Any Small brids that fly in the dark balled up like black birds are probably black birds or once in a while flop down for .2675 sec them resume the buzz Could be teal; prob not but could be..

Most ...any smaller bird unidentified, as in " not a Mallard" is / was a Wigenous.

Any Bird that comes unseen and decoys right in the hole is with out a doubt .. most definately a COOT...

Any duck that resembles a Randy Johnson Fast ball (in size and speed) as you think you saw it fly by was most likely A BuffleHead .

And finally if it is big, slow, beautiful and falls for, the damndest array of The Other Ron"s , Double Secret, classic Modified, Nike swoosh, with a lane ,two notches , a cross wind approach, bent fish hook , huge wadd decoy placement is the stuff Classic hunts are made of.. MR MALLARD!!

Hope that helps.. BwaaaaaaHaaaaaaHaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great post. That'll help us all out. Just print a copy of this out, stick it in your hunting jacket, then cross reference your duck to it's description.

Or you can take the easy route. Shoot the duck, then when the dog brings it back you match it up with a waterfowl ID book. thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

Guarenteed to be correct every time. cheers.gif

Just to set the record straight, I mainly use the blind man approach when setting out decoys. Tossing over shoulder and letting them lay where they fall, that other crap just takes to damn long. Anyway, by the time I get to the nike swoosh I have lost track of what I am doing and have to start all over again from the beginning. biggrin.gif

I'll take these words to heart Ron, print'em, bind'em, and put'em in the blind bag!!
I'll take anything I can get! Because by the time 3 and 4 am come, thats one of the last things I think about is ID, because you know what comes first, and thats WOODIES, and typically for me you know what comes second, the SECOND FLIGHT OF WOODIES!!!...lol...!!!! ....but

When push comes to shove, I'll just let Mattie ID the ducks, if she brings it back, it'll EAT!!...lol!

Damn, slammin me already. Not that I expect anything different.

There was only one I shot at. Don't know how I there ended up being 3 dead ones floating afterwards.

I'm pretty sure someone else shot one before that, and someone shot another after I shot mine. I believe Orrison was to blame for the last one in that group.
